Terms and conditions

We need a few rules so that things stay fair for you, for the other participants and for us. Far more people want to go into the dark than we have cabins, so it matters to us that a booked date is actually used. By booking, you agree to these terms.

Who you are dealing with

Stays in our cabins in Lomec near Kutná Hora are provided by Člověk ve tmě s.r.o. (Chudenická 1059/30, Hostivař, 102 00 Praha 10, Czech Republic, company ID 21298823, registered at the Municipal Court in Prague, file C 399717) and Světlo a tma s.r.o. (Příkop 843/4, Zábrdovice, 602 00 Brno, Czech Republic, company ID 21298611, registered at the Regional Court in Brno, file C 138289). Gift vouchers are sold by Člověk ve tmě s.r.o. The website chamberrest.eu is run by the sister company Světlo ve tmě s.r.o. You will find all the details in the imprint.

How booking works

  1. You send us a non-binding request through the booking form with the date you would like and the length of your stay.
  2. We confirm by e-mail that the date is free and send you the payment details.
  3. Within 5 days of that confirmation you pay the deposit. You can also pay the full amount straight away.
  4. Your date is firmly booked only once the deposit has reached us. If it does not arrive in time, we release the date again.
  5. You pay the balance no later than 30 days before your stay begins, in instalments if you prefer.
  6. If the balance has not reached us 30 days before the start, we pass the date on to someone else and the deposit is forfeited.

Prices and payment

The price that applies is the one we give you when we confirm your date. Prices are in euros. We are not registered for VAT, so no VAT is charged. You can pay by SEPA bank transfer (you receive the payment details with a QR code by e-mail), PayPal or Wise. Any fees charged by your bank or payment service are yours to cover.

A gift voucher can also be paid by card right after ordering (Apple Pay and Google Pay work too) through the payment service Stripe (Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd., 1 Grand Canal Street Lower, Dublin 2, Ireland). You enter your card details directly with Stripe; they never reach us.

If you cannot come

  • 31 days or more before the start: you can move your date once free of charge. If you cancel altogether, we keep 10% of the price.
  • Less than 31 days before the start: the full price is due. If someone else takes your date, you can choose another date or get your money back minus 10%.
  • For a surcharge you can add cover for unforeseen events. With it, we keep only 10% if you cancel.

Please let us know as early as you can. If you are due to arrive on Saturday at 4 pm and cancel at noon, the cabin stays empty. The sooner you tell us, the sooner someone else can come. If we have to cancel a date ourselves, for example because a cabin is damaged, you get a new date or your money back in full – your choice.

Right of withdrawal

Stays on a fixed date: there is no statutory right of withdrawal for booking a stay on a specific date. Under EU law this applies to leisure services provided on a specific date or within a specific period (Art. 16(l) of Directive 2011/83/EU; in the Czech Republic Section 1837(j) of the Civil Code, Act No. 89/2012 Coll.). If you cannot come, the rules above apply.

Gift vouchers without a fixed date: you can withdraw from a voucher for which no date has been agreed within 14 days of payment, without giving a reason. Send a clear statement to info@chamberrest.eu; it is enough to send it before the period ends. We refund the amount paid within 14 days of receiving your withdrawal, using the same method you paid with. Later, a refund is possible minus a 10% fee.

Gift vouchers

  • We send the voucher as a PDF by e-mail, usually within 3 working days of payment. It is transferable.
  • The recipient books a date within 3 months of receiving it; the stay itself can take place later. The period can be extended for a fee.
  • A stay booked with a voucher follows the same rules as any other stay, including the cancellation rules.
  • A voucher cannot be exchanged for cash.

Rules for your stay

By booking, you confirm that:

  1. You are of legal age, have full legal capacity and have chosen a stay in the dark in a windowless cabin of your own free will.
  2. Everything you have told us is true.
  3. You do not have a mental illness that would rule out a stay in the dark, such as claustrophobia, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. If you have ever had such an illness, you will send us a confirmation from your doctor beforehand that you may go into the dark.
  4. You have no other illness and take no medication that would rule out a stay in the dark.
  5. You have read on this website or heard from us how a stay works, including the safety page.
  6. You know you will be in complete darkness. You decide when it gets dark by switching off the light, and you can switch it back on or leave the cabin at any time.
  7. You will end the stay at once if emotional, mental or physical problems arise or there is another reason to stop, and you will let us know.
  8. You are not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other psychotropic substances and will not take them before, during or straight after your stay.

If you leave early

You can stop at any time – that is your right. If you end your stay early, however, the price is not refunded, not even in part.

Personal responsibility and liability

You are responsible for your own conduct and your stay in the dark. We are not liable for things you bring with you. We are liable to you only for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence. This limitation does not apply to harm to life, body or health, nor where the law makes liability mandatory.

Please note: a dark retreat is not therapy

A dark retreat is a stay in the dark – nothing more, nothing less. In Czech it has long been called “léčba tmou” or “terapie tmou”, and in English you will also find the names “dark therapy” or “darkness therapy”. Even so, it is not a treatment or therapy in the medical sense. We are not a medical facility, we do not treat anyone and we promise no cure. We offer stays in the dark and nothing else. If you are not sure whether a dark retreat is right for you, please talk to your doctor first.

Applicable law and disputes

The contract is governed by Czech law, in particular the Czech Civil Code (Act No. 89/2012 Coll.). We provide our services only in the Czech Republic. If we ever cannot agree, you can turn to the Czech Trade Inspection Authority (Česká obchodní inspekce), which handles out-of-court settlement of consumer disputes in the Czech Republic: coi.gov.cz/en/information-about-adr. More in the imprint. How we handle your data is described in the privacy policy.
